John 21:15-17: John Recap & Discipleship Call (Will Rutt)

Context: In this third resurrection appearance at the end of John, Jesus gives Peter a call to tend His sheep, but it's a call to us all...

Text: Read John 21:15-17. Don’t rush. Feel the story. What stands out to you?

  1. OPEN: Advent is here! What hopes or challenges can we share and pray for? (Check out the recent Sandhurst blog of Advent resources for devos, familes, grief and more.

  2. Sermon Review: Reminder - what does Jesus say to us when we compare our stories to others'? (What is that to you? You follow me). How might this apply during Christmas season?

  3. John 21:17: What does it mean to "tend" Christ's sheep? Who is called to this?

    ree

OK - answer - to tend Christ's sheep / minister / shepherd / disciple means: (John 10:11-15) "To take ownership for the spiritual well-being of those in my sphere of influence." How do you see Jesus describing this in John 10:11-15? How would you say this in your own words? Getting practical - who is in your sphere of influence? (FYI - remember - not ownership for the outcome but for influence)

  4. Note the graphic above: Is this different from what Jesus was calling Peter to do? How do we "help others do the same?" (hint: graphic below)

  5. What does it mean to "apply discipleship priorities in normal life environments?"

  6. What four cultivated or designed environments do we have at Sandhurst that specialize in each of the four discipleship priorities?

  7. What discipleship priorities does Jesus model - pick a few:

    1. Mark 1:14-15?

    2. Mark 1:16-17?

    3. Mark 1:21-2?

    4. Mark 1:38-9?

    5. Mark 1:40-2?

    6. Mark 2:14-15?

    7. Mark 2:16-17?

    8. Mark 3:13-15?

  8. What two questions guide the process? Personal reflection - these questions sound simple - can you put names to the first and specifics to the second? We can hide behind vague assumptions!

  9. Will gave three specific instructions on how to speak truth: 1) Ask questions (understand first!), 2) Ask Permission, 3) Speak Bible. Which of these is hardest for you and why? Can anyone tell a story when someone followed this pattern with you and it helped you? (Bonus: Simon Sinek 5-min video on the art of listening)(It's good - 1M views)

  10. Growth: What is a key application you take from this passage / message?

  11. Prayer: A new prayer model based on John 21!

    1. Love: Tell God why you love Him (90% of time here)

    2. Ask: For what you long for (10% of time here)
