GATHERING RECAP: Questions for Sun Mar 8
Message: Glorifying God (Pt 1): Church Discipline (Will Rutt)
Text: I Corinthians 5:1-13
Context: Having completed the opening section (chapters 1-4) on healing division in the church, Paul now turns his attention to correcting abuses in the church - here namely proud sexual immorality
Relate: Who's going camping later this month - why or why not? SIGN UP HERE!
Paul says Christians are NOT to judge (I Cor 4:5) and a few verses later ARE to judge (I Cor 5:12) - what is the difference? (Hint: check out this brief article)
Text: Scan through I Corinthians 5:1-13. What stands out?
V1-2: What is happening in the Corinthian church, and how is the church responding? Why does Paul react so strongly?
V5: How could "handing this man over to Satan" actually be for his good?
V6-8: Tracing the leaven (yeast) analogy, what is Paul's concern if the problem goes unaddressed?
V9-12: What standards does paul give for relating to those outside the church versus those inside? Why the difference?
V1-13: What happens when a church is more concerned with judging those outside the church, rather than those inside? What spiritual sickness does it expose if we give those inside the church a pass on public sin?
Will said, "This text is not aimed at those who struggle for godliness, but those who proudly practice open, unrepentant sin." Why is that important to distinguish?
Reflect: While "live and let live" sounds noble, how can it actually be abusive? Describe the difference between discipline that is punitive and redemptive. Do you have a story of when being disciplined actually helped restore and strengthen you?

Growth: What is a key application you take from this passage / message?
