GATHERING RECAP: Questions for Sun May 3
Message: Godly Fellowship: Conscience & Love (Will Rutt)
Text: 1 Cor 8:1-13
Context: Paul answers the question, can believers eat meat sacrificed to idols, and should they? And what principles guide this decision, since there are no commands from God on it?
Relate: If you could talk to your younger self from 20+ years ago, what would you tell the younger you to care less about? Care more about?
Text: Read 1 Cor 8:1-13. What stands out?
V1-3: "Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up." Knowledge and love are both good, but one without the other is not. Can you recount a time in your life when you experienced this?
In Ch 8 Paul answers the question of meat sacrificed to idols, i.e. a "gray area" where there is no clear command from God, but individual conscience still matters. What are some modern areas of life that would fall into this category? Why might Christian consciences be different?
V9-11: How does Paul define a "stumbling block" and how can we avoid doing this?
v10-12: Why is it important to restrict our freedom at times to avoid creating stumbling blocks for weaker consciences?
V13: Why is it better to lay down "rights" for the sake of love than exercise freedom regardless? Can you think of an example, how you would want this to play out in your friend groups? Or if you are a parent, with your kids' friend groups?

Growth: Will gave us the four action points above- which is easiest? Hardest? Your focus?
