GATHERING RECAP: Questions for Sun Apr 19
Message: Glorifying God in marriage and divorce (Will Rutt)
Context: Paul addresses questions on marriage and divorce
Relate: For those who have experience with divorce or single parent families - when the family of Christ was being most helpful in supporting you, what did that look like? When you were best supported, what was happening?
Text: Read 1 Corinthians 7:10-16, 39-40. What stands out?
Reflect: Paul's teaching makes divorce harder rather than easier - i.e. the bar for divorce is high. While that can feel harsh to people in difficult marriages, why is a high bar for divorce part of God's love for us?
If a "contract" is a commitment to mutual getting, and a "covenant" is a commitment to mutual giving, which is marriage and how have wrong views impacted us?
V10: What does Paul mean by, "not I but the Lord"? If the whole Bible is God's Word, why would Paul differentiate this?
V12-14: What sacred obligation does a Christian have to an unbelieving spouse? What are the limits to this obligation? And what reason is given for the limits?
V12-14: What might it mean for an unbeliever to be "sanctified" by their believing spouse? (see Rom 15:15-16)
V16: How is V16 an encouragement to someone married to an unbeliever?
V39-40: Adam will cover that this coming Sunday...
Growth: How can we apply this in our lives?
