GATHERING RECAP: Questions for Sun Apr 26
Message: Glorifying God in singlehood & marriage (Adam Richardson)
Text: 1 Corinthians 7:8, 17-38
Context: Paul teaches the opportunities and challenges of singlehood and marriage
Relate: A bit of humor - if you're single, what is a myth about singles you find humorous? Or a humorous myth about marriage if you're married?
Text: Read 1 Corinthians 7:8, 17-38. What stands out?
How does Aesop's fable of the City Mouse & Country Mouse apply to this passage?
V7: Paul explains that both singlehood and marriage are gifts - not a gift like a thing or skill, but an opportunity. What opportunities do both singlehood and marriage offer? What challenges?
V17-24: Paul says we should "abide in the place in life that the Lord assigned" - what does he mean? How would you paraphrase in your own words?
V20-4: Slaves and servants were coming to faith and Christ and wondering, can I serve Christ as my King as well as the human lord of the manor. How does Paul answer?
V25-8 and 32-35: Paul leans into one main opportunity of singlehood which mirrors a challenge of marriage. It reads like an overcorrection. Why would he emphasize this so much?
V29-31: Key verses - "as if not" (see article by Carson on this) - again we see exaggerated language (like Christ in Luke 14:26) - How does this free us from sorrows?
Growth: How can we apply this in our lives?
