Looking Ahead: Q's for Gathering 4/19 & Equipping

GATHERING: Q'S for next Sunday April 19

Message: God's glory and divorce (Will Rutt)

Context: Paul is helping this young church apply gospel principles to challenging questions about marriage and divorce.

  1. Relate: For those who are divorced or widowed - when the family of Christ was being most helpful in supporting you, what did that look like? When you were best supported, what was happening?

  2. Reflect: How can we as Christians balance a high view of marriage (based on Genesis 1-2) with compassion for those who experience divorce?

  3. Text: Read 1 Corinthians 7:10-16, 39-40. What stands out?

  4. V10: What does Paul mean by, "not I but the Lord"? If the whole Bible is God's Word, why would Paul differentiate this?

  5. V12-14: What obligation does a believing spouse have to an unbelieving mate? What are the limits to this obligation? And what reason is given f)or the limits?

  6. V12-14: What might it mean for an unbeliever to be "sanctified" by their believing spouse? (see Rom 15:15-16)

  7. V16: How is V16 an encouragement to someone married to an unbeliever?

  8. Growth: What is a key application you take from this passage?

  9. Prayer

EQUIPPING REVIEW: Last Sunday April 12, at 9AM: Godly Family

SINGLEHOOD

  • It is a gift - not like a thing for life, but an opportunity for today (like marriagge)

  • It has advantages: Freedom to develop gifts, pursue interests, serve God & others

  • It has disadvantages: More work to have a "place" in God's family, long-term relational depth and friendship

  • Advice to marrieds: open eyes to singles and treat them not primarily as single (pity & matchmaking) but as humans - brothers and sisterrs with gifts to offer and needs to meet, so be bold in befriending our singles!

EQUIPPING PREVIEW: Next sunday April 19, at 9AM: Godly Family
