Looking Ahead: Q's for Gathering 3/8 & Equipping

GATHERING: Q'S for next Sunday March 8

Message: Glorifying God (Pt 1): Church Discipline (Will Rutt)

Context: Having completed the opening section (chapters 1-4) on healing division in the church, Paul now turns his attention to correcting abuses in the church - here namely proud sexual immorality

  1. Relate: Paul says Christians are NOT to judge (I Cor 4:5) and a few verses later ARE to judge (I Cor 5:12) - what is the difference? (Hint: check out this brief article)

  2. Text: Read I Corinthians 5:1-13. Don't rush. What stands out?

  3. V1-2: What is happening, and how are the Corinthian Christians responding? Why does Paul react so strongly?

  4. V5: How could "handing this man over to Satan" actually be for his good?

  5. V6-8: Tracing the yeast analogy, what is Paul's concern if the problem goes unaddressed?

  6. V9-12: What standards does paul give for relating to those outside the church versus those inside? Why the difference?

  7. V1-13: What happens when a church is more concerned with judging those outside the church, rather than those inside? Can you think of at least 2 negative results from this? What spiritual malady does it expose if we give those inside the church a pass on public sin?

  8. Growth: What is a key application you take from this passage / message?

  9. Prayer
