John 18:1-18, 25-6: Arrest, Denial, Questioning (Will Rutt)
Opener: Many of us watched Charlie Kirk’s memorial service. For those who did, what did you find compelling in a good way? (This is not a time to share what you found annoying or wrong about it, or to air political grievances - please focus on the good in the service).
Context: Jesus is in the upper room preparing the disciples for a new season without His presence, BUT remaining in joy, endurance and peace...
Text: Read John 18:1-18, 25-6. Don’t rush. Feel the story. What stands out to you?
V4: Why do you think Jesus asked this question if he knew the answer?
V6, 11: What do we see about Jesus' power and love in these verses?
V8-9: If love is "steadfast sacrificial zeal that seeks the true good of another":
In what way was Jesus loving the disciples? The crowd?
In what way was the Father loving Jesus?
V10: Why do you think John includes the servant's name Malchus?
V10, 17 (& 25-6): Why do you think Peter acts so differently in these verses, and how can we spot and avoid that same temptation?
Growth: What is a key application you take from this passage / message?
Prayer: Practice again this pattern for prayer together:
Review: silently reflect on your upcoming day/week & what you need
Pray: Believe that He can do it & Ask Him to provide it
Go: Trust what He does & Praise Him no matter what
Consider ahead: Next Sunday, October 12, 2025
John 18:19-23, 28-40: Annas, Pilate and The King (Hal Irvine)
Opener: Have you ever been in a situation (at work or otherwise) where the "boss" is actually NOT the one in charge? How did you figure that out?
Context: At Jesus' arrest, He is bound and questioned by the Jewish high priest and the Roman governor Pilate. But who is in charge?...
Text: Read John 18:19-23, 28-40. Don’t rush. What stands out to you?
V19-21: Why do you think Jesus answers this way? Although Jesus offers it as a question, what greater statement is He making?
V30: What hits you about the Jews' reply to Pilate?
V34: Why did Jesus press this point? (Hint - check your study Bible notes)
Jesus is clarifying the question being asked:
If it were Pilate's idea - then the question is political - are you a Regent?
If it were the Jew's idea - then the question is more religious - are you the Messiah?
V37: Restate Jesus' answer in your own words.
V38: The world is still asking Pilate's question. Why is it good news that God has revealed His truth to us? Why is it so hard for many to accept? Has it ever been hard for you to accept?
Growth: What is a key application you take from this passage / message?
Prayer: Practice again this pattern for prayer together:
Review: your upcoming day & what you need
Pray: Believe that He can do it & Ask Him to provide it
Go: Trust what He does & Praise Him no matter what
