John 19:17-37: It is finished! (Will Rutt)
Opener: Remember to invite (re-post / text / etc above graphic) Fall back Sunday is this Sunday November 2 - a guest-friendly Christian service followed by a free pulled pork BBQ lunch! All welcome! Any questions?!?
Context: Of the seven final statements of Jesus (below, red ones recorded in John), we look at #6 today - "It is finished!" or the one word "Tetelestai!" in Greek:

Text: Read John 19:17-37. Don’t rush. Feel the story. What stands out to you?
Do you have a favorite movie or show that depicts the crucifixion? Why this one?
V26-7: Why did Jesus give his mother over to the care of John? What does this teach us about Jesus? What might it look like for us to apply this?
V30: What was finished? What did it mean that it was "finished"?
Why does it matter to us that Jesus died? What if he hadn't?
Put yourself in Mary's shoes - what must she have felt on this day? Do you think she was encouraged at her son Jesus fulfilling Scripture? What does that teach us about truth, providence and grief?
What does the cross teach us about God?
Growth: What is a key application you take from this passage / message?
Prayer: Practice again this pattern for prayer together:
Review: silently reflect on your upcoming day/week & what you need
Pray: Believe that He can do it & Ask Him to provide it
Go: Trust what He does & Praise Him no matter what
Consider ahead: Next Sunday, November 2, 2025
John 19:38-20:10 & I Cor 15: Burial. Nicodemus. Resurrection. Baptism
Opener: Remember to invite (re-post / text / etc above graphic) Fall back Sunday is this Sunday November 2 - a guest-friendly Christian service followed by a free pulled pork BBQ lunch! All welcome! Any questions?!?
Context: Following Jesus' death, he was buried by Nicodemas, then rose from the dead - but they are wondering what to make of it...
Text: Read John 19:38-20:10 & I Cor 15:55-8. Don’t rush. What stands out to you?
What kind of burial and memorial service would you like and why?
V38-9: Did Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemas show greater or lesser courage in openly caring for Jesus after His death? In what ways might we risk the same things?
V20:1: Why is it important that John identifies Mary of Magdala by name? How does this minor detail confirm the text is true?
It makes the account verifiable to the readers - now they can go to Magdala and ask - did she see what John says she saw?
It gives credit to a woman - in the 1st century, a woman's testimony was not official. So why record it, unless that's how it really happened.
V2-9: What emotions might Peter and John have experienced as they ran to the tomb and found it empty? Imagine the tension between faith and confusion. How do we experience this now? Tell that story...
V8-9: What do you think John believed in this moment? What does that tell us about faith? Can we believe without all the answers? How?
I Cor 15:55-8: Note the "therefore" in V58. How do verses 55-7 lead to V58?
Growth: What is a key application you take from this passage / message?
Prayer: Practice again this pattern for prayer together:
Review: your upcoming day & what you need
Pray: Believe that He can do it & Ask Him to provide it
Go: Trust what He does & Praise Him no matter what
