Review and apply: Last Sunday, October 19, 2025 (Message here)
John 19:1-16: Scourging, Beating, "Crucify!" (Will Rutt)
Opener: Has everyone been baptized? Fall back Sunday is November 2 - a perfect opportunity - see the website for info...
Context: Following Jesus' arrest, He is now on trial before the Roman Governor, Pontius Pilate - and the whole scene is full of contradictions...
Text: Read John 19:1-16. Don’t rush. Feel the story. What stands out to you?
When we are facing a decision and we know what is right, why are we sometimes "torn" - why not just do what's right?
V1: Since Pilate thought Jesus was innocent (18:38-9), why did he order Jesus flogged?
V2-3: Read verses 2-3. Then read Revelation 19:11-16. Pause for a moment of silence to consider who Jesus is, and how the world treats Him. What are your reflections?
V8: Why was Pilate afraid? Do you think Pilate suspected there was more to Jesus?
V10: How can you tell that Pilate is getting desperate with these questions?
V11: How does Jesus' response here free Him - and us - from fear?
V12: We know (from 18:36-7) that the Jews claim here in V12 is a false dichotomy. What false dichotomies does our culture claim about Christ and Christians now?
V15: The end of V15 - perhaps the saddest line in the New Testament. Before we judge others, take a moment to reflect - are there any idols in your own heart that dethrone the True King?
Growth: What is a key application you take from this passage / message?
Prayer: Practice again this pattern for prayer together:
Review: silently reflect on your upcoming day/week & what you need
Pray: Believe that He can do it & Ask Him to provide it
Go: Trust what He does & Praise Him no matter what
Consider ahead: Next Sunday, October 26, 2025
